I am a recent graduate of the AWS Re/Start Programme and excited for a career change to the tech industry.

About Me

Hi, my name is Charlotte Wilkins, thank you for taking the time to look at my showcase portfolio website.
I have always been interested in tech and how new technology is shaping and changing our daily lives. This year due to the pandemic, I was put on furlough from my 10 year hospitality job as a Shift Manager at McDonald's, and this gave me time to study what I was interested in.
The AWS Re/Start programme was perfect for me as the programme covered a range of IT fundamentals such as Linux, networking, security, Python and databases as well as covering AWS. The programme was full time delivered remotely using zoom, slack and online lab environments.
Two weeks after finishing the programme I passed my AWS Cloud Practitioner exam first time. I was really proud of myself for achieving this as before the programme I didn't have any technical knowledge.
Now I am keen to apply my new knowledge and skills into work in the tech industry.

Experience

TECHNICAL SKILLS

● Proficient user of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and basics of coding HTML.
● Fundamental IT skills of Linux OS, writing scripts in Python and Shell, networking, and security.
● Knowledge of core AWS services in the area of compute, storage and networking, including EC2, S3, IAM, VPC, Lambda, Cloud Formation, RDS and Route 53.
● Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information and terminology to non-technical end users.

PROJECTS

Improving my Python with Python Crash Course book

After finishing the re/start programme I am trying to improve my Python by following the activites in the Python Crash Course book.

Building my showcase website

This has been a fun project for me after finishing the programme to show my knowledge I have learnt and apply to a project. I have enjoyed having hands on experience on AWS management console and was interested to see how many services I would use for my website.
Steps I followed to build my website:
• I created a root AWS account then IAM user.
• Then I registered a domain name with Route 53.
• With the domain name I then created two S3 bucket, one as a domain bucket and a subdomain bucket.
• I configured my root domain bucket to enable static website hosting and unticked block public access and attached a bucket policy.
• Then uploaded the index file and website content that I used from HTML5 UP and edited on Visual Studio Code.
• Using AWS Certificate Manager I requested an SSL certificate for my domain to ensure traffic is encrypted and my website is secure.
• I then created a distribution on CloudFront to improve the content delivery network of my website by using Edge Locations.
• With Route 53 I made a record and used the CloudFront distribution as an alias.
This is the architecture of my website on AWS.

Hobbies


Chess
In my spare time I enjoy playing Chess on the app and website chess.com. I like the mental challenge of playing and every game is always different. I find playing relaxing and a good way to switch off.

Women's Football
I am extremely passionate about women’s sports especially football. For me it is important that women playing sports is more globally recognised and encouraged because when I was younger, I enjoyed sports but I didn't have any female athletes to inspire to.
In 2019 I went to the Women’s World Cup in France and was the best experience. From then I went to every Manchester City women’s league game and became a part of the women’s football community.
I have also volunteered to edit a few episodes of a podcast called 'The Women’s Soccer Show'
